Maintaining an Empire: Magical Means of Communication across Ithia.
Carabella: Carabella, Goddess of messages and horses, is generally reserved for sending divine mandates and delivering messages between Gods who are either too lazy or too angry to communicate directly. Carabella is fast enough to deliver messages before they’re sent, making her the most optimal means of communication for those rare few who can coax a delivery out of her.
Clerics of Carabella: Clerics of Carabella can send messages to one another directly and instantaneously. Allowing quick, concise, and clear communication. Though Carabella prefers her servants to be equine in nature, she limits the amount of humanoid clergy she allows power. Generally, only the largest cities can secure a full-fledged cleric to send or receive messages.
C-Horses: C-Horses are far more common and numerous and can be used to send and receive messages between heroes, kings, and others notable enough to receive a C-Horse from Carabella. Though C-Horses have short memories, attention spans, and tend to stutter when excited, scared, or happy, they can easily mess up the messages they try to send. They can additionally be sent off to deliver physical messages.
Giraffes: Giraffes, stolen from Dreous by Carabella, have gained innate communication powers, using their Ossicones to send basic messages to their fellow Giraffes. As these ‘Tall Horses’, trademarked by Carabella, can’t speak, they must relay messages via horse code with their ears and refuse to send more than a handful of words at a time.
Flash Messages: A simple code-based language usable at night using mirrors, light, and a recreation of horse code to send simple messages at a distance. Contrived by the Alchemists, a few Flash towers string across Dophia between Evari Evangalis and Freian Kai’Drona. Allowing fast messages from across the span of the empire.
Messenger Birds: Several guilds and postal services maintain aviaries of various birds trained to deliver messages. Generally using Pigeons for larger packages, Dollidoos are often called in to deliver packages.
Horses: Mounted riders can send messages very fast over short distances and can be more reliable or easier to secure than divine and magical means. With access to Hippocampi and Pegasi, messages can be sent faster via air or over bodies of water.
Looking Glass: These magical mirrors are connected to a twin forged together and then carefully split apart and shaped. Made of polished silver and powered by a caster or magic-infused gemstones, they allow people to view one another and, with the application of a vibration-reading tool, send instant messages. Though the mirrors themselves do not create noise, the glass vibrates in ways that some tools can understand and record their words.
Bound Tomes: These twin books are made from the same batch of pulp, fed blood, and enchanted from the cutting of trees to the binding of covers. What is written in one book appears in the other, allowing immediate messages that can be left when the target is absent and saved for when they return. As they have limited pages, these books are very cost-prohibitive.
Sending Stone: Possibly the most dangerous means of magical communication, these river-smoothed stones have a hole drilled into their center where the blood of the target of communication is set in glass. One can whisper a message into them, and when thrown, they will track down the intended target, imparting the message into their head through kinetic impact with their skull. Some mages save this means of communication for when they’re very unhappy with the recipient. Though they do have the upside of imparting the direct meaning, and it is one of the only means that bypasses language barriers.
Requiem Glass: These smooth black stone mirrors reflect reality as it really is. Ancient relics taken from Septrinian cities at great cost. Able to scry locations for those with great magical finesse, these dangerous relics can be used to speak to those present, hear what is spoken in a location, and mages of great power are said to even cast spells remotely through them. Only a handful of their mirrors have been located, and all known ones are held in the Vaults of the Hall of Heroes or the Ashike Archives.
Rings of Binding: These rings, made from two separate bands forged together- one copper and one silver- bound in gold wire, come in pairs or sets, allowing the wearer of one to feel the rough emotions of each wearer bound into their group. Difficult to make, and with gold hard to source, these rings can allow rudimentary communication, with some users having created codes through flaring emotions for a high price.
Phoenix Note: Infusing paper with the ashes of a phoenix can make enchanted notes. When bound and placed in an enchanted fire, one can send letters to specific people, which will appear when they next near an open flame. As phoenixes are rare creatures, this means of communication are generally reserved for people of note.
