Writing Worlds with Words

Dread Heralds: Dread Servants.

The Dread Servants of the Heralds.

The Empty Ones: Appearing as species conquered and assimilated by the Dread Heralds, except their skin seems hard as porcelain, and they are completely empty on the inside. Grey-skinned; nothing they wear seems able to reflect color, leaving them in a permanent monotone. Their left hands are enlarged, sporting long, sharpened claws that radiate Farlock’s power. Everybody who enters the Dread Herald lands will eventually form into an Empty One. Generally equipped with a spear or a Farlock rifle, only allowed technology unlocked by the world they invade, by whatever guides and drives them.

Empty Ones make up the backbone of the Dread Heralds, filling most of their endless ranks. They are immune to mental manipulation and serve the collective with absolute, mindless devotion.  The claws on their left hand rip more than flesh, tearing out the substance of memory, mind, and body. They hollow you out, turning you into just another Empty One. They take away your identity, your dreams, and your values, leaving only an empty husk.

The Hunters: Rarely seen, these wear very little, with thick muscle on too-long limbs, a short torso, and what appear to be long braids caked in blood and filth that run down their backs, though in truth these are long barbed tendrils they use to entwine and drag back to Farlock. A mask of leather with a long run-down to the floor. The Hunters are the vanguard of an invasion, emitting the Haze Dread Servants, who need to enter a new world. They generate thick fog, making it difficult to find and see.

The Hunters generate the bruised haze that allows the Dread Servants to spill into Ithia and other planes. They bring Farlock with them wherever they go. Equipped with Javelins hammered from pure solidified fear, their gasmasks, and often collect the bodies of the fallen.

The Dread Fanatic: These tall creatures are shadows that wear terror and fear. They are wispy; they twist perceptions around them to appear as nightmares of your own making. They erode memories, twist identity, and strip down the mind until you are hollow, and they fill you with their own nothingness, making you one of them.

They project hallucinations and erode the connections between thoughts, driving people to a mental collapse like Alzheimer’s. They drain minds, memories, twist connections, and toy with the substance of the mind until you are as empty as they are.

The Terror Aspect: These vicious creatures embody terror, incorporeal and immune to most material weapons; they shift through existence, spreading terror and fear to shatter defenders against the Dread Heralds.

The Terror Aspect drinks in courage and calm; they flood the body with hormones that tell the body only terror. They break open lines and allow hordes of Empty Ones to flood gaps, expose flanks, and cause chaos.

Dread Marauder: Nightmarish servants of the Dread Heralds, pale, bulky, and brutish, they embody trinkets from cultures that raided, pillaged, raped, and murdered their way to prosperity. They advance ahead of the main Dread Herald forces, breaking supply lines, burning crops, killing civilians, and destroying factories. They wear the skin of their fallen victims.

Marauders are twisted nightmares, not as empty as the rest of the Dread Servants, but full of malice, hatred, and rage. They convert others to their numbers by vomiting into their victims, filling them with brimstone and lye. They do not feel pain; their bodies are full of corrosive lye, spraying the base when hit to eat away at flesh. They are generally equipped with close-quarters weapons such as knives, axes, and clubs. They dislike impersonal killing.
