The Depthless Dark – Where dread dwells.
Fear the lights in the sky, for they come to make you die.
There is no natural light, no sun, no stars; what is bioluminescent is poisonous or deadly. Fire, endless fire, is the only light. Here, worlds that were devoured by the Depthless crumble in mountains of ruined lands on an endless ocean of black water that reeks of decay and the metallic tang of blood. Toppled mountains make great rocky spines; ruined cities lay scattered half submerged or captured on some larger rise of ground. Great eyes as big as distant moons spread a light the red-brown of gore wherever they watch from the sky, silhouetting the twisted endless shapes of their bodies as big as planets, gorging on worlds still plummeting to the oceans below. On the twisting lands the only glow is form the Corpse Rot, fungus that grow on corpses above the land spreading a pale sickly green light, Blood Tears, strange fungus that grow on the underside of stone where moisture builds and look like oozing blood leaking a blood red fluid that glows in the dark, and Wilting Woad, a strange flower that bleeds light the color of woad from its wilting petals growing only on graves.
Camps and small civilizations that survived being consumed survive. Keeping the light alive with driftwood and oil, lest the darkness take you and drown you in its abyssal depths. Nightmares dwell in the shadowy waters, and men warping by feeding off local fauna and flora hunt them, taking in the depthless into their twisting flesh. Great monstrous whales feed the pyres of countless civilizations, and people pursue fresh lands that may still hold signs of a world where hope once dwelled.
There is no escape, no victory; the seas are depthless and full of darkness and terror… the tides of nightmares never end, but they seem uninterested in wiping out what dwells in the decaying lands. Some believe they feed on the terror, the despair, the pain, the loss, the madness… others can’t help but feel they just don’t matter to the immeasurable, unfathomable depths. Those that survive here fight for every stable piece of ground and resource that can be stolen from lands that have just hit the ocean and have yet to sink. Some stubborn people have tried to recreate some degree of civil society, and several have built cities with technology from more advanced worlds that run on biofuel, oil, and the magical blood of nightmares to power hydroponic farms with grow lights. Unfortunately, many worlds consumed by the Depthless are far too primitive to survive neatly on the Depthless Dark.
