Creatures of Ithia Expanded: The Tengu.

An Advanced Creature Profile by Vincent Groth.

The Kappa are spirits of fresh water sources. Many have been hunted as monsters and creatures of pestilence, and most Kappa exist only in Dodicerous.

-The Wellwater Kappa are the most civilized of the Kappa, serving as spirits of Wells and Groundwater. They are fully humanoid with froglike heads, large, wide eyes, large mouths, and small indentations on their heads that hold the water of their souls.

-The Clearwater Kappa are the largest of the Kappa, serving as spirits of the River and the Lake. Their size depends on the bodies of water they represent. They have large eyes, sharp beaked mouths like a snapping turtle, and hollow heads full of sacred water. They have large grey shells that look like water-worn stones, which they withdraw into to appear as rocks.

-The Lilypad Kappa are spirits of marshes, wetlands, swamps, and water fields. They are humanoid frogs with long forearms ending in webbed hands, which allow them to tread water easily. They have long black hair, which they use as veils. They have long tongues, sharp teeth, and a lily pad that rests on top of their head with a hole to hold the water of their soul.

The Kappa are hardy and rapidly recover when in their native waters.

-The Wellwater Kappa form small societies in underground caverns at the bottom of wells and other bodies of subterranean water.

-The Clearwater Kappa are the strongest of the Kappa with thick stony scales and sharp beaks that can snap through bone.

-The Lilypad Kappa have long sticky tongues which they use to catch and swallow hazardous insects and invasive species.

Kappa are spirits of water, and their tasks focus on maintaining the health of a water table.

-Wellwater Kappa helps keep Wells clean and full of fresh water.

-Clearwater Kappa helps clean up lakes and rivers, but pollution, more so the dumping of iron slag, can drive Clearwater Kappa increasingly aggressive.

-Lilypad Kappa hunt insects and animals that threaten to destabilize their wetlands, serve as pets for farmers of submerged fields, and clean up debris in their wetlands. They are known to attack humans who threaten their homes.

Kappa are spirits and thus are tied to the fae. Though as spirits they are mortal creatures, they share the banes of the Fairy. Kappa cannot risk spilling the water of their soul. To lose their reservoir is death. The Kappa can, with focus, maintain an inward pressure to keep their vital water safely in their heads in day-to-day life.
