Creatures of Ithia Expanded: The Gryphons.

Gryphons are large creatures, part avian and feline. Griffins are slang for Chimeras made to look like Gryphons, but they do not fully qualify.

The Great Gryphon are the largest Gryphon species with an overly large lion’s body a massive eagle’s head and wings. The Great Gryphon is the only species of Gryphon large enough to carry a rider into battle, but they are rare and reproduce extremely slowly, often having only a half dozen spanning entire mountain ranges. Their territory is heavily impacted by the presence of Dragons.

The Plains Gryphon has the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, and is one of the apex predators of the Plains lands, primarily competing with the Plains Manticore for territory. Sometimes they are used as war mounts, but they are not large enough to carry a rider.

The Great Eastern Gryphon sports the body of a tiger and the head and wings of an eagle. The second largest breed of Gryphon and by far the most dangerous and intelligent of their breed, these brightly colored apex predators rule the mountains of Dodicerous, driving off Jarei, Manticores, and drakes. While almost half the size of the Great Gryphon, they are known to easily drive away the larger predator. Few natural creatures are as dangerous as the Great Eastern Gryphon. They cannot be tamed. They are the sworn foes of the Tengu who make their homes in the mountains.

The Eastern Gryphon sports the body of a mountain cat and the head and wings of an owl. Primarily nocturnal, they can bound through tree-tops, fly silently, and ambush their prey from above. Roughly the size of a dog.

The Northern Gryphon sports the body of a snow leopard and the head and wings of a snowy owl. The size of a house cat, they hunt at night and ambush their prey in sudden, vicious attacks. Often kept as pets by woodsmen in colder regions.

The Noble Gryphon sports the lower body of a mountain lion with the forelegs, head, wings, and tail feathers of a peacock. This breed of Gryphon was magically made and is imported from the Vigint lands as pets of status and wealth.

The Doll Gryphon sports the body of a house cat and the head and wings of a Dollidoo. They are playful, cute, and kept as pets by various spell casters. The Doll Gryphon has all the advantages of a cat and a Dollidoo without any of the negatives.

Low Griffins sport a sleek canine body covered in feathers, the head of a hawk, and a long tail ending in a hawk’s tail feathers. Low Griffins do not have wings but are swift, deadly, and apt in hunting packs. They are used by the nobility for hunting and as warhounds.

Vulture Griffins have the feathered bodies of coyotes and the head and wings of a vulture. Fully covered in dark feathers, they circle battlefields, haunt graveyards, drawn to the presence of death, and can follow Kaxis, the reaper of souls, to the death.

Squirrel Griffins are the smallest Griffin species with the body of a squirrel and the head and wings of a mockingbird. They sit and sing, harvest nuts and bugs, and, despite their size, are seen as huge pests.
