An Advanced Creature Profile by Vincent Groth.
The advanced tier of mindless undead require an immense of power, skill, and knowledge to create or in the fate of the Carnalich the destruction of all phylacteries reducing them to soulless mindless shadows. These advanced undead include the Vessel, The Flesh or Bone Golems sometimes referred to as Stonecrafts after the Dr. Stonecraft who created one in the works of Mary Gothique, and the Carnalich. Consecrated ground does not repel these powerful undead.
-The Vessel requires an immense amount of work, months of complex rituals, preservation, tattooing, etches, precious materials, and knowledge from beyond the Veil. The simplified version is that the Brain, Heart, and Liver are removed, preserved, and placed in jars. Vessels look almost ethereal, as if they are no longer fully there, and are devoid of all pigmentation leaving them with no organic color. Arcane markings leave them with highly visible runes and markings across every inch of their skin.
-The Flesh and Bone Golems, though not actually Golems, better known as Stonecrafts are the perfected version of a Stitchwork. These are master crafts, works of art, beauty and power. Bodies are dissected, magically shaped, altered, and enhanced. Parts are taken and assembled with the power based on the combined power of the corpses bound. Dragon Stoneworks are terrifying. They tend to be beautiful, objects of art, monuments to the maker’s skill. They are designed to be aesthetically pleasing in equal parts to their power.
-The Carnalich is what remains when a Lich’s soul is destroyed but the body remains. The longer they exist the more their mind and memories degrade. Driven by embers of emotion murky memories, and the clear final moments of its sapience drive these vicious creatures. They lose the power to maintain their full body and often merely skulls with floating arms bound in ragged robes.
These highly advanced necromantic creations have many abilities and traits.
-Vessels cannot be killed so long as their organs remain. Their bodies will regenerate and rise so long as one of their organs remain intact. Magic that binds, banishes, or moves them does not work on these stalwart guardians and not much can last against their wrath. They are strong, swift, and almost indestructible.
-Stonecrafts are high durable, overwhelmingly strong, though are less swift than the living. Stonecraft recover from injuries faster, can resist mundane weaponry, and resist weaker magics. They are highly intelligent though devoid of any emotion or personality.
Carnalich can summon raw magical energy from the Fury Planes while unable to cast actual spells anymore their attacks of raw magical energy can be more dangerous than fully formed spells. They often still retail the magical artifacts of their previous life which they can often use on old reflexes.
These undead have more varied roles.
-Vessels are used as eternal undying guard of the most powerful of mages. They are terrifying but limited forces.
-Stonecrafts are used as personal assistants, bodyguards, and pieces of art.
-Carnaliches are merely the remnants of a Lich and often remain guarding the lairs they once ruled. Some powerful necromancers and sentient dead take bind them as servants and guardians.
Vessels are the most durable of the undead but are vulnerable in that they must touch each of their jars daily. While they can survive without all their jars, they get weaker and jars they don’t touch daily lose their connection and disenchant. If all three organs are destroyed or disenchant the Vessel ceases. Stonecrafts are difficult to fend off physically but have little recourse against the more powerful magic. They have no actual weakness but have a fear of fire. Carnaliches are vulnerable to physical force, but few will have a chance to get close enough to damage it.
