Writing Worlds with Words

Gods of Ithia Expanded: Avernus the Silent Judge.

Avernus. God of Justice, Avians, and Death.

Known across the plane as Avernus, The Keeper of Scales, The Silent God, The Judge of Souls, The Chasm Keeper, The Law, The Auditor of Fate, The Silent Judge, and The Firebird.

Avernus is a member of the Gods of the Dead.

Holy Books: The Buch der Kronen, The Book of Crowns, The Tosk og Hal, Gambri nuk Kunn, The Immortal Scriptures, The Book of First Flame, and The Book of Scales.

Avernus is cold, unthinking, uncaring, mechanical, justice. Not to be mistaken for someone who fights for what is right but what is written. Those who violate the laws of their society or of the Gods without the safe vouching of another God to tip the scales will find their doom to the Chasm when meeting Avernus in death. Though doing the right thing is often a way to gain the favor of Gods like Zatolen, Vutha, and Talisman for karmic salvation. Avernus is the judge of all souls that die upon Ithia and reach the Underworld.

His symbol is the Balanced Scales—a set of perfectly balanced scales flanked by wings mantling around the sides.

When active on Ithia, The Duet, two moons of black and white, circle the planet Drei both barely visible to the naked eye.

Avernus dwells in the Chasm guarding the prisoner Seir’Ald. It is an unpleasant place, but Avernus apparently doesn’t mind as he never leaves it except to visit Dreous.

Avernus maintains one major divine artifact the Gilded Scales which can accurately weight someone’s cultural virtue and vice. It grants the wielder the insight into the higher morality of a target determining if by the laws of their society if they do more harm than good. Those being judge by the scales cannot lie, deceive, or manipulate lies will not be spoken, half-truths with die upon your tongue, illusions will shatter, shapeshifters will be bound to their original form, magical alterations will be undone for the duration of the judgement.

Avenus does not conform to the dreams and thoughts of mortals; he does not pay attention to the living lest they violate his domain. He is a tremendous undefined bird of raging black flame with bones, talons, and a glistening beak of polished gold. Eyes of brilliant rubies burn like the heart of a star. He stands on one golden claw and holds in the other his divine scales to judge the souls of the dead. He is the only god larger than Siger’Alst and Talcor.

Avenus is seen as a cold, logical deity. He is the only genuinely omniscient deity in Ithia. He is the final. He cannot be swayed by emotion and stands judge over each soul as fair as he is just. Avenus does not grant divine powers to mortals.

There is no benefit to worshipping or punishment for not and thus Avernus has few followers. The Everon keep him in their hearts as their father God but rarely give their absent father much care. Avernus is a cold and unfeeling force of nature and nothing fit for praise.

Avernus’ values.

Pillars(Perceived ‘Virtues’): Law.

Columns(Perceived ‘Vices’): Crime.

While Avernus has few divine followers, he does have a few orders that follow his iron fisted obedience to Law. This includes the Knights of Eternal Justice, The Judges of the Burning Scales, and The Keepers of Law.
