The Dollidoo a species of large flightless bird. Thorough study and dissection of specimens over centuries by scribes of the Hall of Heroes have allowed a deep study of these strange creatures. They seem to be mimicry birds trying to copy actions, traits, and evolutionary advantages of those around them.
According to notes from Scribe Tir Ore the Dollidoo evolves rapidly to fit small niches in an ecosystem. They have developed a symbiotic relationship with a bacteria strain that when exposed to air creates a sulfuric smell warding off predators who may try to make a meal of a dollidoo. The only way to bypass this to Ore’s knowledge is the boil the bird alive or kill it without breaking skin.
According to notes from Scribe Mary Leer the Dollidoo has developed a strange sense for shiny things. Dollidoos seem to detect shiny objects even through walls. Extensive study has yet to explain this strange ability but as Dollidoos have a magpie eye it is believed their fascination with shiny objects is involved in mating rituals. Further study of the composition of the Dollidoo makes it clear that they, like gnomes, are not native to Ithia.
According to conflicting notes between Scribe Silt the Inked and High Scribe Herald Lionguard that the Dollidoo is possibly sapient, but Lionguard denies such silly ideas from an overgrown pigeon. The argument that the use of tools marks intelligence is easily dismissed as both birds, primates, Dreite, and Greenskins have been shown capable of using tools. Silts counter argument includes his own ability to write good. Lionsguard counter is, as the editor of the Hall of Magi, that this is inherently grammatically and logically wrong.
Scribe Harrow Yarrow studies have shown the slow development of their wing claws slowly becoming more agile and increasing capability of manipulating objects. Recent developments show an opposable claw acting as a pseudo thumb. Records show that Dollidoos when exposed to stimuli have made their own little crude farms, built rough huts, quarry stone, and cut down trees. Instances of Dollidoo trading shows a more than animal intelligence but an inability to understand the idea of theoretical value, often the engage in thing-for-thing trade without consideration of theoretical value.
High Scribe Vincent Groth shows fascination on alchemical and magical uses for Dollidoos. Dollidoos have an organ that turns ambient energy, including arcane, into a bile like fluid. These organs and secretions can be used in the creation of magical restoration potions. Further notes is that dollidoos store excess sugar produced by photosynthesis in glands near the base of their beak, these glands can be milked for a thick condensed syrup used in deserts. Dollidoo feathers are generally too soft for fletching though they make for soft material for pillows.
