Writing Worlds with Words

Gods of Ithia: The Gods of the Dead.

Dreous. God of the Afterlife, Beasts, and Death.

Known across the plane as Dreous, Lord of the Pits, The Keeper of Cistern, King of Viwrath, The Omni-Beast, The Decayed Lord, and The Soulkeeper. As far as most mortals view him, Dreous is the Arch-God of the cycle of Death.

His symbol is the Dead Crown – A crown of blooming roses and bloodied thorns knitted together into a crown.

Dreous’ form changes based on culture and species but never from its basic form. He is a towering shadow composed of the parts of every mammal and reptile on Ithia, or at least culturally significant to those who view him.

He is a patient, cunning, and vicious deity who, once wronged, rarely forgets the trespasses against him. He rules over Viwrath, the underworld where the dead souls live until they earn the right to reincarnate to the mortal world. He grants his divine servants blessings to protect the dead from necromancy, purifying magic to cleanse corpses from disease, and magic to calm angry spirits and disrupt the undead.

Avenus. God of Justice, Avians, and Death.

Known across the plane as Avenus, The Keeper of Scales, The Silent God, The Judge of Souls, and The Firebird. Avenus is the Judge of all souls, be they mortals, outsiders, or even fellow gods all who die on the plane of Ithia come to stand before him and his scales.

His symbol is the Balanced Scales—a set of perfectly balanced scales flanked by wings manteling around the sides.

Avenus does not conform to the dreams and thoughts of mortals; he does not pay attention to the living lest they violate his domain. He is a tremendous undefined bird of raging black flame with bones, talons, and a glistening beak of polished gold. Eyes of brilliant rubies burn like the heart of a star. He stands on one golden claw and holds in the other his divine scales to judge the souls of the dead. He is the only god larger than Solus and Talcor.

Avenus is seen as a cold, logical deity. He is the only genuinely omniscient deity in Ithia. He is the final. He can not be swayed by emotion and stands judge over each soul as fair as he is just. Avenus does not grant divine powers to mortals.

Kaxis. God of Death.

Known across the plane as Kaxis, The Unspoken, The Lord of Ferries, The Reaper, and The Final Mercy, Kaxis is the most powerful of the Creator Gods. He is the reaper of souls, be they mortals, outsiders, or gods. He is Death.

His Symbol is the Harvest – A Scythe crossed over a bale of wheat.

Kaxis is a corpselike, half-mummified humanoid covered in layers of tattered shrouds. All that is visible are withered hands and two pinpoint blue eyes. A distortion of air shifts about one hand in the vague shape of a scythe.

Kaxis is calm and quiet, wishing only to be left to his duties. When not busy, he only spends his time with his sister Marlis or Avenus. He grants the final mercy to all things.

Marlis. Goddess of Famine, Drought, Blight, Decay, and Death.

Known across the plane as Marlis, The Mother of Maggots, The Kiss of Death, The Goddess of the Blight, The Final Alure, And The Ruinous Beauty. Marlis entices and guides the dead, freshly separated from their flesh by Kaxis, to the underworld.

Her Symbol is the Shepperd – a crook surrounded by four black tears representing each of the four gods of Death.

Marlis’ form changes to fit the most enticing form for each mortal she encounters. She is beautiful and pale, with ashes darkening her lips and around her eyes. Her hair is the night at the witching hour speckled with stars; her eyes are depthless pools of moonlight.

Marlis is far less calm and patient than her fellow gods of Death. She is chaotic and flirty, and if not regularly appeased by the living, she sends forth blight and drought. She is the only God of the Dead who can bring about her domain by herself and on a whim.
